“Social anxiety is not and never will be just a shy individual. It was never as simple as that. To help one suffering, we must understand that the romanticization is not the realism of it. We must stop thinking that it is cute for an individual to have these “awkward” tendencies. We must understand that the extremes of this disorder is a lot more than a shy personality. By doing this, we mask the truth and make it more difficult to help the one in this cycle. We must realize the actions that are taking place in the disordered person’s head at the time and the physical effects that come with it; that this is not just shyness. This is sweaty palms and nauseousness. This is panic. This is many sleepless nights. This is feeling so ungodly uncomfortable that you feel the need to resort to your “comfort place”. This is insecurity to the point of pain. To stop this unsettledness inside of the impacted, we must stop painting a picture that does not depict the reality of this inner hell; to stop making beauty out of something so ugly.”
