Everything Between The Stars and The Otherworld by Cyril Rolando
Cyril Rolando is a digital art painter with an obsession for surrealism. Based in France, this artist who is also a psychologist has a deep understanding of the inner workings of the human mind. Tim Burton’s grim and brooding stories as well as Hayao Miyazaki’s larger than life cartoon plots have been a source of inspiration in his work.
As a self taught artist Rolando has found his calling in the surreal world which he calls the Otherworld. His intuition guides through his lack of knowledge or experience and he has found his way into working with colors. Digital is his preferred medium of art and he has an extensive portfolio.
His art seeks to disintegrate the rules of the norm; assumed colors for given elements, lines and shapes and movement in context to them - he breaks away and uses fantasy to put them back into an oddly beautiful artwork. The small delight an observer can take in Rolando’s work is the fact that he tries to exude emotion from every insignificant and flat surface. There’s plenty of movement and story to his art, yet it feels peaceful and magical with no brushstroke gone to waste.
The characters that are lost on his canvas are mostly children and sadness permeates with the innocence his art portrays. Rolando uses playfulness paired with darkness, the bright colors revealing a less vivid story. There’s no possibility he has not explored in the Otherworld. In this fantasy world, everything can happen… an ant can carry the Earth, an Eiffel Tower will bloom, a lake can bubble with Champagne.
Behind the exuberant palette, the artist paints his own story. He defines his work as “art therapy” where the turbulent and overwhelming color scheme matches his emotions of pain, joy, loss excitement and sadness at different stages of his life. It’s possible to mirror your true self in the detail laden and intricate work of his digital art. Cyril Rolando’s enchanted Otherworld is beautiful because he believes that absurdity and opens mindedness to making mistakes can help an artist create something powerful and magical.
