? typography poster tutorial ?
Someone asked me how to make a typography poster like this one, and i will try to make something you can understand. I must say that i’m sure there’s easier ways to make stuff like this, probably on Illustrator, but i only know how to make stuff on photoshop (and 99% the times i get lost and confused and i don’t know what i’m doing anymore, seriously), so i will try to explain how i made my poster in the best way possible. This is my first or second try of typography, so it can be a little bit confusing, but any question, my ask are always open! I’ll explain by parts, so let’s go:
? graphic tutorials masterpost ?
How to make a text like this
Part one ?
Select the Horizontal Text Tool and write your text
Click with the right button of the mouse on the text layer, then duplicate the layer two times
With the Move Tool separate the layers, like this ^
Let only one layer visible (to make a layer invisible click on the little eye on the left, click again to make it visible) then click twice on this layer, and the box Layer Style will open. Click on Gradient Overlay
Click on the little bar with the black/white gradient and this other box will open
Click on these little squares and drag them to the center. It will look like this
Now, click in the black square and then in the box color, choose you color, press ok and make the same with the white square ?
I recomend using only one color but in different tones, like light and dark pink, it will look better. Now, go to the Inner Shadow tab on the list
Change the Distance to 1, the Size to 0 and in the Color put a darker tone of the same color of the gradient, it will make a solid shadow inside the word. Go to the Stroke tab, in the end of the list
Change the Size of the stroke to 2. Put a light color, like white, beige or gray, i put a light beige. Press Ok.
The first part of the text are ready, and it will look like this:
Part two ?
Now, back in the Layers list, make the ready text layer invisible and other text layer visible ?
With the Horizontal Text Tool again, select the text and change the color to white, then make the Background layer invisible
Select the text with the Rectangular Marquee Tool (the first tool on the box) and press CTRL+C to copy. Press CTRL+V and paste. A new layer with the copied text will appear, delete the other copied layer. Make the Background layer visibile again. Click twice on the text layer you’re using and the Layer Style box will open again. Go to the tab Pattern Overlay
You have to select a pattern now. To save a pattern, open you image go to edit > define pattern > ok, and your pattern will appear on the list. I used the pixel pattern from this pack, i changed the color to brown. Go to the Stroke tab again and make the same thing you did in the other layer, with the same color
mine looks like this
Part three ?
Make this other ready layer invisible too and make the last text layer visible, let’s work on it now. Click twice on the layer to open the Layer Style box again. Go to the Color Overlay tab
Change a different color, i put a light blue to contrast
Go to the Drop Shadow tab
Change the Size to 0 and the distance to 2. I forgot to change in the picture but in the Blend Mode, where’s write Multiply, select Linear Burn in the list and slow down a bit the opacity. The color of the shadow will depend on the color of your background, mine is white so i put beige. Now press ok.
My text looks like this
Part 4 ?
Now, in the Layers list, make all the layers visible
Select the Move Tool and put all the texts in the same place, one above the other
Now, click on the layer of the text with the pattern and use the arrows of the keyboard to drag the text, with Move Tool still selected. Drag a bit down and to the right (or right, the direction you prefer), to make just a little part of the text visible, like this
Make the same thing with third layer
And ta-da! Your text are ready! To put it in the place you want, make the Background layer invisible, select the image with the Rectangular Marquee Tool and go to Edit > Copy Merged, now you copied everything. I will only explain how to make this text because it’s the harder, now you know how to make the gradient, change the colors and make the shadows, you can create your own style!
How to put a pattern in a text with gradient
Make the gradient as shown in the first tutorial
Make the background layer invisible, select the text with the Rectangular Marquee Tool and copy
Paste the image, turn the Background layer visible again and the text layer you copied invisible
Click twice in the image layer to open the Layer Style box and go to the Pattern Overlay Tab. Select the pattern you want
Change the Blend Mode to Overlay and decrease the opacity
How to let the text curved like this
Write your text with the Horizontal Type Tool and in the bar on the top click on this icon
This box will open, select the Arch in the list. In the bar Bend change the number to +13. There’s a lot of other shapes you can use too.
How to make a ribbon like this
Creat a new layer, select the Rectangular Marquee Tool and make a rectangle on the canvas
Paint it the color you want
With the Rectangular Marquee Tool again select part of the rectangle and copy it
Past and put the layer under the bigger rectangle layer, like in the picture ?
Click twice in the layer to open the Layer Style box, go to Color Overlay and select a darker tone of the same color
Duplicate this layer and put it on the other side ?
With the Polygonal Lasso Tool (below the Rectangular Marquee Tool on the tools box) make a triangle from the tip of the bigger rectangle to the tip of the smaller triangle, like in this picture ?
Create a new layer and paint the triangle with a darker color, make the same in the other side ?
Select the layer of one of the smaller rectangles and in this rectangle, make another triangle with the Polygonal Lasso Tool again, in the border
Delete this selection and make the same on the other side
The ribbon is done, now you can write what you want in the center!
How to turn the image/text a bit
Select the image with the Rectangular Marquee Tool
Click with the right button of the mouse and click on Free Transform
Click on one of those small squares and drag up or down to turn
Then press ok
To make it while you’re writing the text, write what you want and press CTRL, the little squares will automatically appear then you make the same thing.
